By Founder, Roger Bartlett
I was farming with my father and brothers at Castleman’s Farm, Hinton St Mary in 1959 at the age of 17. We started an agricultural contracting business including hay, straw baling, forage harvesting, combining, ditching and drainage works when suddenly my father died and the family lost the tenancy of the farm which was then milking 130 Friesian dairy cows giving an average of 1,550 gallons of milk per cow, per year. My other brothers went in to different parts of agriculture. Tony my eldest brother went in to management of a dairy estate in Hampshire, Paul and Stephen took good tractor driving jobs for Hinton St Mary Farms, and I continued the agricultural contracting business we had set up with my father
In the last 55 years, I have carried out all types of agricultural contracting and land drainage schemes with some very good and loyal staff. Most schemes were designed, undertaken and final plans drawn up by myself. I have kept the very first new tractor that my father bought from Braddick and Son in Gillingham when we were on the farm at Hinton St Mary called Castleman’s Farm. She is a 1954 International B450 diesel tractor named Nelly. She has clocked over 26,000 Hours and still runs on the original crank shaft. She has been fitted with 4 sets of pistons and liners since new. I have driven Nelly from new and it is in my will that Nelly must never leave the family or be sold.
After 40 years running our company, I handed it over to my children, Stewart, Tina and Robert. Robert is now the Managing Director, Tina is the Company Secretary/Director and Stewart carries out all types of work including agricultural and civil engineering works. I still work for the company as estimator and Land Drainage specialist
None of this would have been possible without the support of our customers, especially those I started with over 55 years ago.
